Burst Pipe? How to Find and Shut Off Your Main Water Valve in Pueblo, Cañon City & Southern Colorado

S&BStars and Bars Restoration•IICRC Certified

When a pipe bursts, every minute counts, and the single most useful thing you can do is stop the water at the source. Yet we walk into homes all the time where the owners spent twenty minutes searching for the main shutoff while water poured through the ceiling. With freezing nights arriving across Southern Colorado, now is the time to find yours.

Find your main water shutoff before you need it

In Pueblo, Pueblo West, Cañon City and Colorado Springs, most homes have the main shutoff where the water line enters the house. Common spots:

  • A basement or crawl space wall that faces the street
  • Near the water heater or furnace
  • A utility closet or garage
  • In older homes, a pit or box near the front yard with the meter

In mountain and rural areas like Westcliffe, Rye, Beulah, Cuchara and La Veta, you may have a well and pressure tank instead. Your shutoff is usually at the pressure tank, and there is often a breaker for the well pump too. Know where both are.

Test it now

A valve that hasn't moved in ten years may be stuck or leaking. Turn it off, open a faucet to confirm the flow stops, and turn it back on. Old gate valves (the round wheel kind) often fail; a quarter-turn ball valve is far more reliable. If yours is stiff or drips, a plumber can swap it for not much money, and it's cheaper than a flood.

Tag it with a bright piece of tape and show everyone in the house, including teenagers and house sitters.

When a pipe bursts: the first ten minutes

  1. Shut off the main water.
  2. Turn off power to the affected area if water is near outlets, ceilings with light fixtures, or the panel. Don't stand in water to do it. If you can't reach the panel safely, call your utility.
  3. Open faucets at the lowest point to drain remaining water.
  4. Move belongings out of the wet area and lift furniture legs off carpet with foil or blocks.
  5. Take photos and video before you touch anything. See our insurance documentation checklist.
  6. Call a restoration company. Drying should begin within 24 to 48 hours to avoid mold.

Prevention that actually works

  • Disconnect and drain outdoor hoses; see our first hard freeze guide.
  • Open cabinet doors under sinks on exterior walls during a hard freeze.
  • Let a faucet drip on the coldest nights, particularly the one farthest from where water enters.
  • Keep the heat at 55°F or higher if you travel; for a vacation place, read winterizing a cabin.
  • Seal gaps where pipes enter the house.

If the power goes out in a storm, see what to do about frozen pipes during an outage.

When it's already wet

Once water is off, the clock is on the drying. Wet drywall, insulation and flooring can often be saved if caught fast; see whether wet hardwood, drywall and carpet can be saved. Our IICRC-certified team uses moisture meters, air movers and dehumidifiers to dry structures completely instead of guessing.
