Pueblo Kitchen: Under-Sink Leak, Mold Removal and Full Rebuild
A slow leak under the kitchen sink ran long enough to soak the floor and grow mold on the wall behind the cabinets. We took it from the first inspection through containment, tear-out and the finished rebuild, so the homeowner dealt with one company the whole way.
What we found
The leak was at the sink drain. By the time it was found, water had worked into the floor and under the tile, and mold had grown across the drywall and insulation behind the sink base. Leaks like this stay hidden inside a cabinet for months, which is why they do more damage than a burst pipe that gets noticed right away.
Containment and tear-out
We sealed the kitchen off with plastic containment and zipper doors so mold spores could not travel to the rest of the house, and ran air filtration inside the work area. The cabinets, affected drywall and insulation came out down to the studs so every wet and moldy material was removed rather than painted over.
Rebuild
Once the area was clean and dry we put the kitchen back together: new cabinets, countertops, backsplash and sink. The last two photos are the finished kitchen.
